DALLAS -- Houston co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kliff Kingsbury said after the Cougars' 30-14 win over Penn State in the TicketCity Bowl on Monday that he is headed to Texas A&M to join Kevin Sumlin's offensive staff.
Kingsbury has served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Cougars for the last two seasons and has been at UH the last four years. In 2008-09 he was an offensive quality control assistant.
The former Texas Tech quarterback's roots are in the Air Raid offense, which he played in at Tech under Mike Leach and from which UH's current offense is based. Kingsbury, 32, said it was a tough decision to make.
"If it was anybody else other than coach Sumlin, I don't know if I'd be doing it," Kingsbury said. "But I have such faith in him and know what he brings to the table as a head coach and I think the sky is the limit for him."
UH quarterback Case Keenum said that Kingsbury has meant a lot to his development as a quarterback through the years.
"I can't say enough about the game plan and what Kliff has meant to me," Keenum said. "He's a huge part of why I'm where I am today. I'm very appreciative of everything he's done for me."
Kingsbury said that he will head to College Station on Tuesday to meet with Sumlin and work out details regarding his future.
Kingsbury may not be the only staff member that new head coach Tony Levine will have to replace. UH co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach Jason Phillips may also have a new home soon. He told the Chronicle on Monday that he is "exploring a number of options."
