COLLEGE STATION --- The Texas A&M football team had a pair of practices on Tuesday as preparations for the 2011 season continued for the Aggies.
Head coach Mike Sherman said the Aggies bounced back from Monday’s practice with a pair of solid workouts on Tuesday.
“Two of the things we didn’t do well yesterday – we didn’t tackle well and we didn’t have good tempo – and I think we addressed both of those issues,” Sherman said. “We came out this morning with a lot better focus and concentration. It’s hard because we have so many players that aren’t practicing (due to injuries) to get timing and rhythm. Hopefully we’ll get that back soon.”
Sherman addressed the Aggies’ punting situation that features three veteran kickers and a touted newcomer that has been injured for the majority of fall camp.
“I don’t think I’ll know until I see (freshman Drew Kaser) 100 percent kick,” Sherman said. “In the scrimmage (last Saturday), we did some good things, but we’re still lacking consistency. Not just in that practice, but being able to come out and do it day-in and day-out. I don’t feel 100 percent confident. We have some kids that have been working at it and are more than capable, we just have to have some more consistency.”
Running back Christine Michael, whose season ended with a broken leg in the sixth game of 2010, says that he’s gained 12 pounds since last year and now weighs in 221 pounds.
“I’m just working on my size, getting my size back to when I broke my leg,” Michael said. “I’m working on speed and strength, working on catching the ball out of the backfield. I’m just trying to find a way to contribute to my team as much as possible.”
Michael had great things to say about teammate Cyrus Gray, who posted 100 rushing yards or more in the final seven games of 2010.
“He’s just an all-around player, an all-around guy,” Michael said. “On and off the field, he does things right. He’s very competitive. He’s not one of those guys that needs all the spotlight. The things that he’s good at, he gives to us younger players. There’s going to be a time when he’s not here, and he tries to give us as much as possible.”
