Right now, A&M is scheduled to face Missouri as their final
season-ending opponent in 2012, and LSU will continue their Battle for
the Golden Boot game with Arkansas. There is a desire on the part of
LSU, though, to drop their annual cross-division rivalry game with Florida,
move the Arkansas game to another spot on the schedule, and end the
season with a game against A&M. The change in schedules could take
place as early as 2013.
A season-ending game against LSU would be huge for both schools. A&M would replace Missouri, who we have no real rivalry with, with an LSU team we have played 50 times in our history, and have a border state rivalry with. My freshman year at A&M, we opened the season with LSU as part of our non-conference schedule, and we were in the midst of a long series with the Tigers. The 1995 game was the last time we played the Tigers until the 2011 Cotton Bowl. There are still plenty of fans like me, who remember the rivalry we had in the 1980s and '90s, and welcome its return. Putting the game as the last game on the schedule in the regular season (dare we hope for the Thanksgiving Day night game?) would only increase the excitement and importance place on the game. Make it a night game on Thanksgiving alternating between Baton Rouge and College Station every year, and you now have must-see television for all college football fans. A&M-LSU on Thanksgiving would be a ratings bonanza for television and would give both schools a marquee game to point to for recruiting every year. Moving the game to make it the final game for both teams in the regular season makes too much sense. Let's make it happen.
