TEXAS A&M FOOTBALL
Postgame notes: #17/18 Texas A&M 33, Iowa State 17
Saturday, October 22, 2011 • Jack Trice Stadium, Ames, Iowa
ABOUT THE WIN:
· It was the Aggies’ third straight victory.
· It was A&M’s fifth straight win in true road games.
· A&M has now won nine of their last 10 games against Big 12 opponents, which is the Aggies’ most successful run against Big 12 foes since the formation of the conference. The previous best run was 8-1 by the 1998 Big 12 Champions (7-1 vs. Big 12 in regular season with win over Kansas State in the Championship game.)
· A&M upped its all-time record against Iowa State to 10-1.
Senior placekicker Randy Bullock connected on a career-high four field goals and booted three extra points against Iowa State as he became the fourth Aggie to hit the 300-point plateau. At an even 300 career points, Bullock joined placekickers Kyle Bryant (325) and Todd Pegram (309) and running back Jorvorskie Lane (302) on the elite list. Bullock now has 49 field goals made in his career. Only Bryant, Pegram and Tony Franklin have more than 50 three-pointers in A&M history.
Bullock was a perfect 4-of-4 on FG attempts, and has now connected on 10 straight FGA. For the season, Bullock is an amazing 15-of-16 in field goal tries, including 7-of-8 on field goals over 40 yards in length.
GRAY AND MICHAEL MOVE THE CHAINS:
Aggie running backs Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael went over 100 rushing yards in the same game for the third time, as Michael gained a game-high 142 yards on 18 carries and Gray added 125 yards on 21 carries. Gray and Michael also did it against Texas Tech and Baylor in 2009. Combined, the pair rushed for 267 yards on 39 carries to pace the Aggies’ balanced 247 rush/263 pass attack.
With Michael and Gray doing much of the damage, the Aggie offense gained 510 total yards on a season-high 90 plays. It was A&M’s fourth game with 500 or more yards of total offense in 2011.
MORE MILESTONES FOR FULLER:
Already the career record holder for catches and receiving yards and touchdowns, senior WR Jeff Fuller hit the 200-career catch milestone against the Cyclones. He also reeled in his 31st receiving touchdown which puts him 12 points away from 300. Only Aggie running backs and placekickers have ever hit the 300-point plateau.
STRONG GAME FROM EPPERSON:
A week after attempting no punts against Baylor, A&M punter Ryan Epperson showed no signs of rust against the Cyclones with five boots for an average of 46.6 yards, including one coffin-corner effort.
NO SACKS FOR PORTER, STILL A STRONG GAME:
Big 12 sack leader Sean Porter didn’t have a sack for the first time this season, but he still had a strong game with a team-high eight tackles, a tackle for loss of yardage and pass broken up.
The Aggies, who came into the game as the Big 12 sack leaders, had a season-low two quarterback sacks against Iowa State, but had a season-high nine pass breakups against the Cyclones.
HEADING TO HALFTIME:
The Aggies have scored in the final two minutes of the second quarter in all seven games in 2011. In the last five games, all five scoring drives have been eight or more plays and over 62 yards in length.
