Tuesday Practice Notes

Texas A&M Football Notebook

The skinny: The Texas A&M football team practiced for more than two hours in shells Tuesday afternoon. The first hour was spent inside the McFerrin Center due to inclement hour. The second hour was spent on the Coolidge Practice Fields.

A change of pace: CoachKevin Sumlin looked a little agitated when the lightning began to strike right before practice started at 5:30 p.m. But after practice, he said changing things up was good for the players.
“I talked to our guys about transition and getting out of a routine and sometimes that’s good,” he said. “To have them try to create the same energy, it’s kind of like a road trip. Not the same comfortable environment. I thought they handled it well.”

Consistency still an issue: A&M had multiple starters missing time during spring practices. With a new coaching staff, that presents an issue. Sumlin has harped on the team being more consistent in all facets of the game. And so far, he hasn’t seen it.
“It’s not where we’d like it be,” Sumlin said. “After four days, we have to be a more consistent team. It’s hard to do. We’re starting to infuse some new talent in there.
“[For those guys], these are their first four practices in the scheme.”

Defensive line likes the youth: Senior defensive lineman Jonathan Mathis missed the entirety of spring football, recovering from a knee injury that kept him out of the 2011 season. Mathis, combined with freshmen Polo Manukainiu and Alonzo Williams, create a bevy of options for defensive line coach Terry Price.
“It’s like having a whole new D-line with Mathis back,” Sumlin said. “We’ve got a bunch of guys playing we had never seen play before and coach Price is pretty happy about that.”
The thing Sumlin likes most about the freshmen is they seem to be rubbing off on the experienced players, who may be in their third or fourth training camp.
“Their energy and their ability to play with a lot of energy and effort, I think has helped bring the level up front up on our D-line.”

Showers has a cannon: When discussing the quarterback competition, Sumlin was complimentary of all four quarterbacks — Jameill Showers, Johnny Manziel, Matt Davis and Matt Joeckel. But he talked at length about Showers’ ability.
“Jameill’s got an extremely strong arm, an extremely quick release and an ability to throw balls into tight coverage,” Sumlin said. “He’s got a cannon.”

Next: The Aggies will have their fifth practice of training camp at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The team has its first two-a-day on Thursday. They will host an open scrimmage at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Kyle Field.
